Mint Chocolate Chip Nice Cream Smoothie Recipe by Green Blender

35 Smoothies With Cacao

Cacao, which is chocolate in its rawest state, is native to Central and South America, and started to rise in popularity after it was discovered by European explorers and used for trading. It’s not as sweet as most store-bought chocolate out there, but in its original form, it’s actually considered a superfood.

When looking for cacao, make sure the variety you’re purchasing is unrefined, and hasn’t been mixed with any kind of preservatives (including sugar).  A good example of raw, organic cacao can be purchased here.

Health Benefits of Cacao

Scientific studies have shown that raw cacao can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease as well as lower bad cholesterol and blood pressure. It’s also extremely high in manganese (two tablespoons have about 14 percent of our daily magnesium needs), fiber and iron.

Cacao is known for its anti-inflammatory properties (the reason behind its ability to lower all of those negative cardiovascular issues), but another smaller benefit is that it’s a natural stimulant, meaning it gives a burst of energy and even happiness-inducing cortisol without any additional jittery feelings.

And what about its proposed aphrodisiac qualities? Science is still a little mixed on that one, but it’s safe to say that if someone makes you a cacao dessert of cacao-infused smoothie, the chances of them getting a thank you kiss are pretty high!

Among other things, magnesium aids in regulating muscle and nerve function, your body’s blood sugar levels, and blood pressure.
