The 43 Superfoods for Green Smoothies by GreenBlender

45 Superfoods To Add To Your Green Smoothies

We may be a little biased, but we believe a green smoothie is one of the best ways to start your day. And while fruits and vegetables are delicious and wonderful, the key to a truly healthy smoothie is to make sure it’s a valid meal replacement.

What does “a valid meal replacement” mean? It means that in addition to fruits and vegetables, there is protein, healthy fats, a wide array of vitamins, and fiber.

To help you create a truly balanced smoothie, we’ve rounded up 45 of our favorite superfoods that are all easily blendable and easily acquired — whether that’s from your local health food grocery or online superstore. For each superfood, we’ve listed a few of their health benefits, what they taste like, and what other ingredients they go best with.

Whether you’re a smoothie newbie or have been around the blender block a few times, this list is exactly what you need to get the most out of your green creation!

Health Benefits

Native to South America, acai berries are high in antioxidants (they contain more than grapes, blueberries or strawberries), as well as high in fiber and vitamin C — making them an excellent immune booster. There is also evidence to suggest that daily consumption of acai helps with blood circulation, and aid cells in fighting off free radicals.

The berries are often described as tasting like a cross between a blackberry and a piece of dark chocolate. Acai berries are not overly sweet, and are sometimes described as having a slightly bitter flavor.

Best Blended With

Because acai isn’t too sweet, it’s best to blend this superfood with sweeter, softer fruits like berries, banana, pineapple or mango.

Try our Acai Pear with Cinnamon smoothie.

Health Benefits

Traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine, amla contains very high levels of vitamin C, as well as Gallic acid, a compound that has been shown to repair the luster of dry or damaged hair. The berry has also been linked to lowered cholesterol.

Amla can be sour and astringent initially, but also has a sweet aftertaste.

Best Blended With

Amla is very tart, so we recommend pairing it with sweet and tropical fruits such as banana, mango, or pineapple to counteract the sour taste.

Try our Pina Colada with Amla smoothie.

Health Benefits

Used in Caribbean, Middle Eastern, and Latin American cooking, allspice is a flavor combination of cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg (hence the “allspice” name). This fragrant and unique spice contains the chemical eugenol, which is a powerful antioxidant, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Eugenol is believed to kill germs, ease muscle pains, aid digestion and improve circulation.

Allspice is pungent, fragrant and quite “spicy” when used in larger quantities.

Best Blended With

Allspice’s pungent taste can be paired with apples or pears for a warm and cozy concoction.

Try it in our Sweet Potato Pie smoothie.

Superfoods by GreenBlender, almonds

Health Benefits

Almonds have natural calming properties and are rich in stress-reducing vitamins and minerals like magnesium, zinc, and vitamin E. They also provide an excellent source of the mineral selenium (a deficiency in selenium has been associated with feelings of fatigue, depression and anxiety).

Almonds have a delicate, nutty taste, and blend seamlessly into smoothies.

Best Blended With

The delicate taste of almonds means they pair well with a wide variety of ingredients. Consider adding almonds to smoothies with banana, pears or oats to increase the creaminess factor.

Try our Almond Banana Bread smoothie.

Baobab is very high in vitamin C, which helps in the production of collagen and elastin.  Additionally, baobab has high doses of antioxidants, adding to the complexion benefits of this superfood. Calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, and potassium are all contained in baobab, making it a great natural addition for those who deal with low iron issues or calcium deficiencies. Finally, Baobab is known as nature’s original laxative due to its high content of soluble fiber.

Baobab’s taste is described as “sweet, tangy” and “pear-like.”

Best Blended With

Blend up baobab with sweet fruits like apples, mangos, kiwis and bananas to help even out its tanginess.

Try our Baobab Bliss smoothie.

Butterfly Pea Flower Tea

What Is Butterfly Pea Flower Tea, blue

Health Benefits

Like green tea, Butterfly Pea Flower tea is full of potent antioxidants, and has even been studied for its ability to help protect the skin against premature aging (it fights against glycation, which is protein damage caused by an influx of sugar molecules). There have been additional studies showing the tea’s ability to help fight against internal inflammation.

When consumed with hot or cold water, the taste is usually described as “earthy,” and similar to the flavor of unsweetened green tea.

Best Blended With

The earthy taste of this tea is lifted when combined with citrus fruit, berries or pomegranate.

Try our Blue Butterfly Pea Lemonade smoothie.

Health Benefits

Scientific studies have shown that raw cacao can help lower the risk of cardiovascular disease as well as lower bad cholesterol and blood pressure. It’s also extremely high in manganese (two tablespoons have about 14 percent of the daily requirement), fiber and iron.

Cacao is known for its anti-inflammatory properties (the reason behind its ability to lower all of those negative cardiovascular issues), but another smaller benefit is that it’s a natural stimulant, meaning it gives a burst of energy and even happiness-inducing cortisol without any additional jittery feelings.

Raw cacao tastes like very, very dark chocolate (it is the raw form of the stuff, after all). Cacao comes in two forms: cacao nibs and cacao powder. While cacao nibs add great texture, the cacao powder has a more distinctive chocolaty flavor and is more nutrient dense.

Best Blended With

Cacao is best in creamier smoothies, so it goes well with bananas, coconut, and nuts.

Try our Chocolate Covered Coconut smoothie.

Camu Camu

camu camu by greenblender

Health Benefits

Camu camu’s main claim to fame is its potent punch of vitamin C.  One spoonful of camu camu powder in a smoothie will provide you with about 118 percent of your recommended intake. It’s also known for its antiviral properties, with many people using it to help stop the flair-ups of infections like “cold sores, herpes, shingles, and the common cold.” Camu camu also has Valine and Leucine, essential amino acids that help the body maintain good muscle and bone density, and a good amount of potassium.

Camu camu powder (which is usually the easiest way to use it in smoothies) has a tangy, lightly citrus taste.

Best Blended With

Due to its light, citrus taste, camu camu goes with a variety of flavors, but especially orange and pineapple. From mild to zingy smoothies, camu camu can go undetected, but its great benefits won’t!

Try our Tangerine Dream smoothie.

Health Benefits

Cardamom is a great source of potassium, calcium and magnesium. The volatile oils cardamom contains is what truly makes this spice stand out. These oils include pinene, sabinene, myrcene, phellandrene, and limonene, and all aid in digestion. In addition to these volatile oils, cardamom also contains potent antioxidants.

Cardamom has a  slight lemony smell and taste.

Best Blended With

Cardamom’s citrusy flavor is best complemented by stone fruits like apricots or berries (such as blueberries).

Try our Cardamom Peach smoothie.

health benefits of cashews by greenblender

Health Benefits

With less fat than most other nuts, the majority of the fats that cashews do contain are monounsaturated fatty acids, the healthy kind of fat that’s essential for a steady metabolism. Additionally, the American Heart Association says monounsaturated fatty acids can help reduce “bad” cholesterol, and lower the risk for heart disease and stroke. Cashews also have quite a lot of protein; one fourth of a cup of cashews contains five grams of it! They also provide one with a healthy amount of copper, magnesium, and 10 percent of your daily allowance of zinc.

Cashews have a light, nutty taste, which is why they’re often used in raw desserts and vegan cheeses. They’re perfect for giving your smoothie a creamy consistency without adding much flavor.

Best Blended With

Because cashews add a ton of health benefits and a silky texture without much additional flavor, they’re perfect for green smoothies!

Try our Cara Cara Cashew smoothie.

The Benefits Of Cayenne Pepper by Green Blender

Health Benefits

Cayenne is rich in multiple vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin E, potassium, manganese, and flavonoids. It’s because of these nutrients that cayenne has been proven to ease upset stomach, ulcers, sore throats, irritating coughs, and diarrhea. Cayenne is also a well-known digestive aid. It stimulates the digestive tract, increasing the flow of enzyme production and gastric juices. This boosts metabolism and can help the body get rid of toxins.

Straight up: Cayenne is spicy! The peppers are spicier than most mild jalapeños, and the ground-up spice should be used sparingly. As with most things, start with a small amount, and then work your taste buds up to a comfortable level of heat.

Best Blended With

Here are GreenBender, we like ourselves a little heat, and routinely put a dose of cayenne in our smoothies. Try cayenne with sweeter fruits like pineapple or mango.

Try our Spicy Mango Wakeup smoothie.

Chamomile Tea

Health Benefits

Loaded with antioxidants, chamomile tea is an alternative medicine staple, and is often used to treat everything from stomach cramps, to irritated skin, to an anxious nervous system. Many people drink chamomile tea before bed as a natural calming agent and a non-medical sleep aid. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Chamomile herbal tea is grounded and earthy with hints of apple and floral sweetness.

Best Blended With

It has a light, airy, and really palatable taste that goes well with just about everything. We especially love it in refreshing springy smoothies with ginger or lemon.

Try our Chamomile Coconut smoothie.

Chia Seeds

Reasons to Add Chia Seeds to Your Diet

Health Benefits

Chia seeds are mainly known for their ample Omega-3 and fiber benefits, but these little seeds (which have been cultivated since the Aztecs were walking the earth), are great for a few other reasons as well. One ounce contains 10g of fiber and 5g of protein, and a good dose of calcium, potassium, and copper. Chia has been known to help with weight loss (keeping you full on a few calories), lowered cholesterol, and raised HDL cholesterol — the good kind of cholesterol that protects against heart attacks.

Chia seeds are virtually tasteless, which means they take on the flavor of anything they’re mixed with. Because of this, chia pudding — chia seeds mixed with almond or coconut milk and a variety of sweeteners — has become a popular healthy dessert.

Best Blended With

Because these seeds tend to expand in liquid, it’s best to use a bit of extra water or nut milk when blending them in a smoothie. Letting the seeds sit for a few hours (or overnight) in liquid will increase their volume and make it easier to portion them out.

Try our Apple Chia Refresh smoothie.

What's the difference between spirulina and chlorella by green blender

Health Benefits

Chlorella is rich in the cartenoids beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and lutein. It’s also an abundant source of vitamins B, C, D, E, K, and the minerals phosphorous, calcium, zinc, magnesium and iron. Chlorella is rich in protein and contains more protein per ounce than a serving of steak. This superfood also offers a rich source of healthy fats including oleic acid. Additionally, chlorella has been shown to support healthy hormonal function and good cardiovascular health, and is known for detoxifying the body.

Chlorella has a strong, “earthy green” taste.

Best Blended With

Due to its flavor, we recommend pairing chlorella with citrus, ginger or pineapple to help lift and lighten the green taste!

Try our Emerald Green smoothie.

the health benefits of cinnamon by green blender, 2

Health Benefits

Cinnamon is extremely high in antioxidants. This spice is also a potent anti-inflammatory, and there have been numerous studies showing the benefits of daily cinnamon consumption and the treatment of chronic issues like arthritis and certain autoimmune disorders. It’s even been said that cinnamon may help with neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

Regular consumption of cinnamon has been linked to lowered blood glucose. It may also help lower cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. Perhaps one of the best benefits of daily consumption of cinnamon is that it’s been scientifically proven to be a natural anti-cancer agent (as with most natural sources, more in-depth testing has to be done).

Cinnamon definitely has a very distinct flavor. It’s spicy and slightly sweet notes take a dessert smoothie to the next level.

Best Blended With

Cinnamon works best in creamier smoothies, and with ingredients like banana, cacao, oats and apples.

Try the Apple Pie Smoothie  or the Maple Carrot Cake smoothie.

The Life-Saving Benefits Of Flaxseed by GreenBlender

Health Benefits

One of the biggest benefits to eating flax is the amount of lignans available per serving. Lignans are “fiber-related polyphenols” (antioxidants) that can actually help balance hormones, and may help fight against hormone-related cancers such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer and prostate cancer.  Additionally, because of its high soluble and insoluble fiber content, as well as its Omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed not only fights inflammation, it may help lower cholesterol and will keep you feeling satiated throughout the day.

Like hemp seeds, flaxseed has a very subtle nutty flavor, making it ideal for nearly any smoothie.

Best Blended With

Flax is basically undetectable when blended in smoothies, so throw it in any recipe to up the creaminess and get your fill of Omega- 3s and fiber!

Try our Banana Swiss smoothie.

anti-inflammatory foods by Green Blender

Health Benefits

Ginger has so many health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties, blood sugar regulation, and gastrointestinal relief. It may be best known for helping relieve nausea related to sea sickness, chemotherapy-related nausea, nausea after surgery, and morning sickness. Ginger may also help protect against osteoarthritis because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

When eaten raw, ginger has a very spicy flavor.

Best Blended With

A little caveat, due to its strong taste, if you’ve never used ginger in a smoothie, start out with a small serving, and then increase as your taste buds allow! Ginger is great for cutting the green taste that comes with certain leafy greens. We love using ginger in our smoothies, especially when pairing it with citrus fruit like oranges, or dark leafy greens like spinach and kale.

Try our Sweet And Sour Beet smoothie.

Matcha provides both a boost of natural energy from caffeine, and a sense of focused calmness thanks to the amino acid L-theanine.

Matcha is also full of catechins, antioxidants that have been shown to help fight against, and possibly even prevent, cancer. A few other common foods — like cocoa and apples — also contain catechins, but matcha is more catechin-dense than those other foods, meaning you get a lot more catechin bang for your buck in one serving of matcha.

There have also been studies linking matcha tea to weight loss and lowered cholesterol.

Raw matcha powder can have a slightly bitter taste

Health Benefits

One of quinoa’s main claims to fame is the fact that it’s a “perfect protein,” meaning that it contains all 20 amino acids (which are necessary to create protein), including the nine amino acids our bodies don’t produce on their own.

In addition to a healthy amount of protein per serving, quinoa is also full of fiber, with a 3.5 oz serving of cooked quinoa providing about 7g of fiber.

Dubbed “mushrooms of immortality,” reishi can help boost the body’s immune system. Studies have shown that reishi is a potential natural therapeutic cancer fighter, specifically for breast cancer. Other studies have linked reishi to improvement in brain impairments resulting from degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s.

Reishi is also great at lowering inflammation in the body, improving immune function, and helping with blood circulation. Finally, Reishi is known as an adaptogen. Adaptogens are compounds and plants that are said to help the body move toward equilibrium in times of stress, returning the nervous system back to normal.

Can turmeric fight depression by greenblender, ground turmeric

Turmeric contains the powerful compound curcumin, which helps with inflammation, aids in digestion, fights cancer, eases arthritis, and lowers the risk of heart attacks.

Turmeric has been shown to help protect the brain via the compound ar-turmerone. This potent compound is beneficial in repairing the brain’s stem cells and helps keep the brain functioning at its best and brightest.

Adaptogens like turmeric help your body naturally acclimate to changing environments. Adaptogens have evolved over thousands of years to support and improve the body’s ability to stay in balance and function optimally during times of stress.

Another way that turmeric can be useful is in easing joint pain, muscle fatigue and even arthritis.

Turmeric is mildly aromatic, and has hints of orange or ginger. It has a pungent, bitter flavor.

Yacon root

Yacon Root, Nature's Natural Weight Loss Supplement by Green Blender

Health Benefits

Yacon root can help lower blood sugar, and some studies even suggest that it can aid in weight loss by helping individuals feel fuller for longer periods of time, and creating a very regular digestion cycle.

Additionally, yacon has a high amount of fructooligosaccharides, naturally occurring compounds that inhibit the body from absorbing any simple sugars. These fructooligosaccharides may be the reason behind yacon’s ability to lower blood sugar, since they actually lower the amount of glucose produced in the liver.

Yacon root has a mild, sweet taste that some describe as a mixture of watermelon, pear and celery all together.

Best Blended With
