Lots of people talk about avoiding the typical 9 – 5 job, but athlete and trainer Alex Silver-Fagan has actually figured out a way to do it.
After graduating from NYU with a Marketing degree, Alex decided that she wanted to follow her fitness dreams as far as they would take her — even if there were no promises of stability attached. Since then, she’s become a bikini competitor, personal trainer, CityRow instructor, and weight-lifting advocate (especially for women).
We caught up with the blonde bombshell during one of her busy days to find out what makes her tick.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Eager. Energetic. Silly.
Tell us a little bit about your fitness journey and business. How did it come to be, and what is it all about today?
After deciding during my senior year of undergrad at NYU that I didn’t want to have a typical “9-5” job and that my lifestyle needed a change, I started to diet and train for my first bikini competition while simultaneously studying to be a personal trainer. Although my college degree is in Marketing, I knew that fitness was the right path.
My whole fitness journey/career itself has been very natural. Every opportunity that has come my way, while of course the result of hard work, has come to me organically. What I mean by this is that I’ve never reached for something off in the distance that I couldn’t see. Instead, I made concrete plans with tangible goals, and focused on crushing each of them one at a time.
It all started as a means of change and a way “out” of the norm, now it’s all about providing that same drive and motivation to others so they realize that anything is possible if they take a leap and work hard.
Green Blender is all about finding enjoyable ways to be healthy, and empowering you to indulge in your health. How do you indulge in your health, and why do you think it’s important?
I indulge in my health in a number of different ways. Firstly, I always make it a point to move throughout the day and scheduling workouts is very important to me. I feel my best and my healthiest when I’m active. Secondly, I make sure to fuel my body properly. Eating healthy truly is the key to feeling amazing. Additionally, I also make sure to give my body rest when it needs it. Sometimes it can be hard to skip a day of sweating but I know that in the long run my body will thank me.
What is your favorite way to stay fit, and what’s your advice to others who are looking to get active?
My favorite way to stay fit is with high intensity workouts that get my heart rate up, challenge my muscles, and leave me dripping in sweat. It’s not only satisfying to know you finished an awesome workout, but also it’s cool to realize how hard YOU worked and pushed past your own limits.
My advice to others is to try it all! You’ll never know if you like a certain type of workout if you never try it. And for my ladies, pick up the heavy damn weights. The only thing that will bulk is your self-confidence.
What has been your biggest challenge when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle, and how have you overcome it?
The biggest challenge with leading a healthy lifestyle is balancing it with working hard. Even in the fitness industry as a trainer and a group instructor, it’s hard to keep the balance between work and your health. It’s easy to get worn out and run down really fast. This is why it’s even more important to eat right and give your body rest when it asks for it.
And finally…what is your favorite Green Blender smoothie recipe?
This is such a hard question because every one I try, I end up liking more than the last! But I think my favorite thus far is the Braeburn Apple Tea.
- 1 ½ oz collard greens
- 1 Braeburn apple – chopped
- ¼ avocado – pitted
- 1 tsp matcha tea
- 3 sprigs mint
- 3 tbsp pecans
- 1 ¼ cup water
- 1 cup ice
