If the current weather has your hair feeling a little less than moisturized, you may want to skip the expensive leave-in conditioner from your drug store or salon and a try an all natural alternative.
You probably already have the ingredients in your fridge and pantry, and each one comes packed with natural vitamins and minerals that your hair desperately wants. Plus, you don’t have to deal with a bunch of other chemicals or scents muddling their healing power!
If you aren’t afraid of cracking an egg on your head or wearing a towel as a turban for an hour, read on!
Coconut oil has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, as well as a good dose of vitamin E, making it not just a super moisturizing conditioner, but a great natural remedy for dandruff. Its fatty acids may also help with annoying split ends.
Massage the coconut oil into semi-wet hair and let sit for 30 – 60 minutes. Cover your hair with a swim cap or towel (since the oil can stain clothes).
Rinse your hair with shampoo one to two times. You may also want to use an egg wash (basically an egg beaten with a little bit of water) to help get all of the coconut oil out if your hair is super fine or oily. Just make sure you use lukewarm water so you don’t end up with scrambled eggs on your head!
Avocado and Egg
This mixture is especially great if you have frizzy, limp hair that’s been over-processed.
Mash an egg and half a ripe avocado together until there are no lumps, then while you’re in the shower and your hair is damp, add it to your head from the roots to the ends. Wait five minutes and then rinse thoroughly with warm (not hot) water. Dry and style as normal. Be amazed at how baby soft your mane has become!
Yogurt and Honey
You may be a little hesitant to drizzle honey over you hair, but this sticky stuff is actually a humectant, attracting and retaining moisture in your follicles. It’s also chock full of vitamins (if you buy the organic, local kind). Yogurt has protein and lactic acids, which help to cleanse your scalp and whisk away dead skin cells.
For this conditioner, take about two big spoonfuls of yogurt to one spoonful of honey. Mix together and then massage into your damp scalp and down to the tips of your hair. Let stand for 20 minutes, and then rinse out using your normal hair washing routine.
