Marijuana is pretty famous these days, what with its recent legalization and decriminalization in certain states. And while that’s all well and good (really good, for certain people who find medical marijuana life changing), we wanted to bring your attention to a slightly lesser known cousin of the smokable stuff: Hemp seeds.
The hemp plant is actually a species of cannabis that contains very little THC (the stuff that gets you high), but the seeds from this plant are little protein powerhouses full of vitamins and nutrients your body craves.
Hemp seeds are usually recommended for vegetarians and vegans because they contain about 35 grams of protein per tablespoon. In addition to that massive amount of muscle-building goodness, hemp seeds are also high in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids (GLA). Omega-3s are known to benefit the heart, lower cholesterol, and even help the brain function better. If you’re not a fan of the taste of fish oil (which most people take for Omega-3s), hemp seeds are a good alternative!
If you need more magnesium, phosphorus, iron and zinc in your diet, hemp seeds are here to help. Three tablespoons provide “50 percent of the daily value for magnesium and phosphorus, 25 percent of the daily value for zinc and 15 percent for iron,” which means you can really help your bones and digestion just by drinking a hemp seed smoothie in the morning!
Speaking of digestion, hemp seeds have a lot of fiber, so they’ll keep you fuller longer, and more “regular.”
The seeds themselves have a light, nutty flavor, and provide a nice garnish for salads, or even as a topping for oatmeal or other baked goods.
While everyone may have their own opinions when it comes to the kind of cannabis you smoke, it’s probably safe to say that we can all agree on the healthtastic nature of hemp seeds. If you can’t find them at your local specialty foods store, there are tons of options online!
