This Diet May Help Fight Depression

Depression is one of the most common mental health issues in the United States. It’s so common, in fact, that the National Institute of Mental Health theorizes 16.2 million adults (or 6.7% of the adult population) has had at least “one major depressive episode.”

While everyone’s personal wellness journey is different (and it’s always important to talk to a medical professional when it comes to depression), there is a ray of hope for those seeking a more natural route to alleviating symptoms.

Can Fruits and Vegetables Make You Happier?

According to a new study out of the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL, older adults were 11 percent “less likely to develop depression” if they maintained a diet that was low in sugar and saturated fat, but  rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Conversely, the participants in the study who maintained a more Western diet (higher in saturated fats and lower in fresh produce), had a greater risk of developing depression over the approximately 6.5 years that the study ran.

While the authors of the study say that more research is needed to show a direct cause and effect when it comes to eating healthy and a better mental state, it makes complete sense that when we inundate our bodies with vitamins, antioxidants, and the proper amounts of fiber, healthy fats and protein, everything from our brains to our nervous systems will be able to work at optimal levels.

Instead of forcing our bodies to bounce back after big sugar crashes, adding to the plaque in our arteries, and weakening our immune systems with packaged, over-processed foods, a diet high in natural foods works to fight back against any previous bad habits, as well as external and internal stressors.
